Did you know that Rabies is also prevalent in rural areas?

According to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 80% of human rabies cases take place in
rural areas. In the rural communities, where stray dogs and other infected animals may be rampant,
there is an increase in the interaction between animals and humans. This increases the chances of the
disease being transmitted from rapid animals to humans, as a result of the increased contact. Also, as
40% of infected people are below age 15, it can be assumed that the children’s exposure to the dogs are
reasons why children “between ages 5 – 14 are frequent victims”.
